These days there seems to be an abundance in devices that wants to turn your surface into more than just a surface. While a table might be good for books, computers, plates, and etc., we have noticed that there are efforts to make surfaces “smarter”, like turning it into a touchscreen, or turning it into a keyboard.

Now there is a device on Kickstarter called Knocki that wants to turn any surface into a smart surface. What do we mean by that? Basically Knocki is a device that you place your table, wall, or pretty much any surface you want. When placed on a surface, it will be able to detect your knocking or tapping, with different knocks/taps design to executive different commands.

For example tapping quickly 3 times could allow you to turn your lights on or off, while tapping twice would activate the thermostat. Alternatively it could also be used as an alarm where someone knocking on your door could have the device send you a text message to let you know someone’s there.

Best of all, Knocki will work with a variety of connected objects such as Nest, Philips Hue, WeMo, and more, so you’ll have your pick of what it can do. Knocki was actually announced last year but it is only recently that it has made its way onto Kickstarter. If you’d like to pledge your support, you can hit up its Kickstarter page where it has managed to blow past its $35,000 goal by more than 550%.
