It doesn’t feel like it but it has almost been a year since Microsoft released Windows 10. Microsoft provided Windows 10 as a free upgrade for all those who were running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, provided that they upgraded within one year of the release which took place on July 29th last year. Microsoft is now reminding that starting July 30th it’s going to charge $119 for Windows 10 upgrades.
Some had assumed that in order to push the adoption of the latest iteration of its operating system Microsoft will continue to provide the upgrade for free even after the year was up. The company’s reminder today effectively serves as a notice that it’s in no mood to do that.
The reminder was bundled with an announcement that there are now 300 million machines out there running Windows 10. Microsoft is using this milestone to promote the fact that it’s no longer going to offer this as a free upgrade from July 30th, 2016. “The free upgrade offer will end on July 29th and we want to make sure you don’t miss out,” it writes in a blog post.
If you have a PC running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 it’s best to upgrade to Windows 10 for free before time runs out. From July 30th, you will have to pay $119 for the full version of Windows 10 Home or you will have to purchase a new computer that comes with Windows 10 out of the box.
