It has only been a couple of days since BMW announced the slightly upgraded version of its i3 electric car but it looks like the company is going to make us wait a year for the bigger i8. BMW first came out with the i8 in 2014 and the model is now due for an update. According to reports, the company is going to launch the new i8 late next year.

BMW hasn’t officially confirmed any details of the improvements that will be made to the new i8, but the report suggests that the car’s electric motor will see a ten percent improvement in power aside from a facelift.

It’s also said that the 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine that works in conjunction with the electric motor will receive a power boost as well. Apparently the combined power output is going to touch 420 horsepower as opposed to the 365 horsepower in the existing model.

Changes will also be made to the six-speed automatic transmission and all of this will result in a car that’s quite a bit faster than the current model. The new model will show how BMW has continued to develop its hybrid capabilities and how it’s looking to push the envelope further.

Pricing and availability information has not yet surfaced.
