Bedtime stories used to be simple: kids would lie in bed getting ready to sleep, and a parent (or both) would come in, pick out their favorite book, and read it to them to go to sleep. However Samsung has decided that maybe bedtime stories could be taken to whole new levels and have since launched the Bedtime VR Stories app.

As the name implies, this is an app designed for virtual reality and for Samsung’s Gear VR headsets. What happens is that both the parent and kid will wear a headset each and launch the app, and from there, the bedtime story can then be experienced in virtual reality in a mystical world while the stories are being read.

It sounds like a fantastic idea but there are some problems. The first is that it will require users to own two Gear VR headsets and two Samsung devices. Secondly, it is only being tested in the UK meaning that we don’t know if it will be launched stateside. Thirdly, strapping a VR headset onto your kid before they sleep sounds like a recipe for keeping them up later than you would like.

Plus according to Engadget’s Devindra Hardawar, the blue light emissions from the headset could not only mess up your sleep cycle, but those of your children as well, so while it might be fun, you could wake up to cranky children who did not get a good night’s rest. That being said, it is still a pretty good idea and maybe one that’s better reserved for the daytime.
