Back in the day when cameras with phones first launched, all users had to do was point their phone at an object and snap it. There was no such thing as laser autofocus, or phase detection autofocus, let alone features like optical/digital image stabilization, but obviously we have come a long way since then.

Most high-end smartphones these days offer such features by default, and Sony is no different. The company’s Xperia X and Xperia X Performance both come with Sony’s trademark SteadyShot feature, which is basically a form of image stabilization technology, and recently Sony has posted a comparison video on YouTube to show it off.

As you can see in the video above, one half of the video is without SteadyShot, and the other half does. The one without SteadyShot is noticeably shaky and we’re not sure if it was exaggerated for marketing purposes or if it is really that unstable, but either way it makes the version with SteadyShot run smooth like butter.

Of course your mileage will vary. If you are going to run up hills and jump around, there’s really only so much ANY image stabilization technology can do to stabilize your footage (you might want to consider investing in a gimbal), but for regular video shooting and photos, it looks like SteadyShot is more than capable of getting the job done.
