battlefield_1_02EA’s decision to call the next Battlefield title “Battlefield 1” is indeed confusing, but there’s a reason for it, and that reason is because the game is set in World War 1. Makes sense now, right? However it seems that EA is now worried that kids these days might not have an idea of what World War 1 is, or its significance.

After all there have been numerous wars in the past, but unless you’re a war buff or a historian, how many major wars throughout the centuries can you think of? Speaking to GameSpot, EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen said, “World War 1, we were worried that many of the younger consumers out there didn’t know that there was a World War 2 or Vietnam, so World War 1…”

He adds that there are technology aspects of World War 1 that makes for an interesting setting. “I think what people don’t understand about World War 1 is the technology shift that went on during the war. People started the war on horseback and ended the war with airplanes and tanks and battleships and submarines. And that’s a huge opportunity for us to be able to do a video game around.”

So far it seems that the feedback for Battlefield 1’s launch has been positive, at least based on the trailers. This is versus the likes of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare which had a more modern/futuristic setting that apparently garnered the trailer more than 2 million dislikes since we last checked.
