Stabilizers are great gadgets, they’re amazing for capturing smooth images and video as they keep the camera steady and reduce shakiness in the footage. Cameras can be safely locked into stabilizers but as this video shows, it’s always best to keep a hand on your gear just in case the stabilizer decides to fail. The video shows a guy being very proud of the way the stabilizer works, which ends up dropping a $70,000 camera.

That’s the thing about equipment, it’s never safe from failing, and the guy has learned this lesson in a very hard and expensive way. The shock visible on his face as gravity pulls the $70,000 camera down is a testament to his never forgetting to keep hands on a stabilizer ever again.

This video was captured at the Cine Gear Expo in Los Angeles this past weekend. We can see the guy testing out the stabilizer by dancing, lifting, spinning, showing off just how good it is. The camera attached to the stabilizer is believed to be the ARRI Alexa XT, a professional video camera that costs $70,000.

For the most part, the stabilizer does its job and keeps the camera perfectly stable as the guy does his little dance, and then it fails and takes the expensive camera with it. One can only hope it was insured. Now you know it’s important to use your hands as well unless breaking a $70,000 camera doesn’t bother you.
