Western Digital, SanDisk’s parent company, today announced the launch of what it claims to be the world’s fastest 256GB microSD card. The intended purpose of this microSD card is recording and saving 4K footage from smartphones, drones, action cameras, and similar products. It has got enough storage onboard to tackle all of that, and then some.

This isn’t the only 256GB microSD card that’s available on the market, though, Samsung offers one too and it’s only slightly slower than the 256GB SanDisk Extreme microSDXC UHS-I card.

It offers transfer and write speeds of up to 100MB/s and 90MB/s respectively making it capable of transferring a full HD movie in under 45 seconds.

A slightly cheaper version of this new SanDisk microSD card has been launched as well and it’s geared more towards the average consumer. The 256GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Premium Edition has a transfer speed of up to 95MB/s, the company hasn’t mentioned the write speed. Both of these microSD cards are shock proof, waterproof, temperature proof, and X-ray proof.

The 256GB SanDisk Extreme microSD card is priced at $199.99 and it will be available for purchase in the fourth quarter of this year while the $149.99 Premium Edition will be available starting August.
