macbook_air_2013_3-800x270The MacBook Air exists in a really weird place amongst Apple’s MacBook lineup. Rewind the tape a few years back, the MacBook Air made perfect sense. It is a basic, slim, and light laptop for users who did not need the power of the MacBook Pro, and/or could not afford it. However with the introduction of the 12-inch MacBook, where does the MacBook Air stand?

It seems that there are some who believe that Apple could be getting ready to phase it out. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities has recently offered up his opinion that Apple could be getting rid of the 11-inch MacBook Air. Instead Apple is expected to replace the 11-inch with the current 12-inch MacBook, while retaining the 13-inch model.

Does his prediction have any basis? If you were to take a look at the recent MacBook Air update, it was really nothing to shout about, or at least nothing to get excited over. All the laptop got was a new color option and the upgrade in RAM, but other than that we suppose it wasn’t really an upgrade that would compel current owners to get it.

Of course it is entirely possible that Apple might be holding out for some kind of major update, so maybe we won’t completely write it off yet. In the meantime, word on the street has it that Apple has a major MacBook Pro upgrade planned for later this year, so we’ll have to wait and see if Apple has any news about the MacBook Air lineup then.
