iphone batteryWith Apple being as big as they are, it also makes them pretty ripe for lawsuits since everyone wants a slice of that pie. The latest lawsuit we’re seeing being thrown at Apple is from a company called Somaltus. They are claiming that Apple has infringed upon a 2010 patent relating to battery technologies used in the iPhone.

According to the complaint, it sounds like the lawsuit is targeting the iPhone’s “fast charging” battery technology, which Somaltus claims that they own the patents to. Part of the complaint reads, “The Product has a charging system according to which the system operates in fast-charge mode until the battery reaches 80% capacity and then adjusts to trickle-charge mode when the capacity exceeds 80%. When the capacity drops below 80%, the system gain adjusts to fast-charge operation.”

If this sounds rather vague, it is because Somaltus has been referred to as a “patent troll”, which is basically a company that routinely buys up patents and uses their vague nature to sue companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, and the likes in hopes of getting some kind of settlement to make it go away.

The company has successfully settled with companies like Ford and Nissan in the past, so there is some precedent to their claims. Whether or not they will be successful against the likes of Apple remains to be seen.
