The upcoming Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will be taking players into the future (something that apparently gamers don’t seem to particularly fancy), but did you know that at one point in time Call of Duty was almost set in ancient Rome? This is according to a report from Games Radar in which they managed to speak to some people who were involved in the game.

According to their report, Activision at that time were asking developers to come up with ideas for a Call of Duty game, and the developer with the best idea would be the one responsible for making it a reality. The developer back then responsible for the game was Vicarious Visions who has since gone on to help develop the Skylanders franchise.

One of Games Radar’s sources Polemus said, “We were asked to do some Call of Duty prototypes, so we had a whole team working on a new prototype we called the Fireteam. It was basically a new Call of Duty but with an overhead Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 camera.” They even went as far as a creating a working prototype of the game.

According to Polemus, “I really thought an ancient warfare game would do well, re-skinned with the Call of Duty engine. Basically we were following Julius Caesar’s Tenth Legion – his special forces during those times – and we were doing a one level prototype based on the Battle of Alesia. So we built the one mission based on that. We had everything from riding horses, to riding an elephant, to working with catapults. All done in the Unreal Engine for rapid prototyping”.

Unfortunately due to a differences in opinion and the unwillingness to compromise, the game was never made even though it had made its way to the top with Activision’s CEO Bobby Kotick. In any case you can check out a brief demo of the game in the video above.
