evolveTurtle Rock Studios’ Evolve was released early last year. While multiplayer FPS titles aren’t new, Evolve borrowed from the idea of games like Left 4 Dead where players could play as hunters while they hunted down a huge monster which would be controlled by another player, meaning that it could to be more challenging compared to playing against AI.

It was an interesting approach and in some ways, reminds us a bit of raids in MMORPGs where players band together to defeat the boss. Unfortunately the game did not do as well as they had hoped, which ultimately had led to Turtle Rock Studios to announce that they will be making Evolve a free-to-play title.

According to the developers, to help get players interested in the game again, they have made some pretty huge changes. “We want that magic back and we aim to make it happen. We’ve made a lot of changes, improvements and additions to Evolve over the past year and we’ve got a lot more coming. In short, we’re giving this game a vigorous overhaul!”

Apart from making it free-to-play (along with the usual microtransactions), they are also changing up the UI, maps, improving load times, the way the hunter classes are played, and so on. Will this be enough to bring players back to Evolve? We suppose now that it’s free, it won’t hurt you to give it a try, right?
