tesla_model_x_1Many of us refer to electric carmaker Tesla as simply “Tesla”, which is pretty identifiable even though the company’s full and official name is Tesla Motors. However could the company be thinking of making the “Tesla” name its official name? According to a report from Reuters, it looks like that could be the case.

Reuters recently discovered that according to internet accreditation company ICANN, Tesla had changed its domain name and address from “teslamotors.com” to just “tesla.com”. This was followed by a tweet from the company’s CEO Elon Musk which read, “Will be working at Tesla on Autopilot & Model 3 today, then aiming to pull an all-nighter and complete the master product plan.”

So what does this mean? Could this be an indication of an upcoming major product launch? According to Reuters, Apple underwent a similar change back in 2007 where they were known as Apple Computer, but shortened it to Apple ahead of the iPhone’s launch, which safe to say was a pretty big deal not just for the company, but for the industry as well.

In any case it could be a simple rebranding since everyone pretty much referred to the company as Tesla instead of Tesla Motor, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled to see if there might be more to this than just a name change.
