AT&T Tower
AT&T isn’t the country’s first carrier to sign this deal with Cuban telecommunications provider Empresa De Telecomunicaciones De Cuba. Many of its rivals have already inked similar agreements. As a result of the deal between AT&T and ETECSA announced today, the former’s subscribers will be able to get roaming access in the tiny island nation. However, AT&T specifically pointed out that it’s going to confirm wireless roaming availability as well as pricing at some point in the near future.

“Cuba is a growing international calling destination for our customers,” said Bill Hague, AT&T’s executive vice president of global connection management. Companies in the United States are gradually being given access to the Cuban market which is why carriers like AT&T can finally set foot into the country.

President Barack Obama restored the country’s relations with Cuba last year after more than five decades of tension. Travelling restrictions have now been eased and telecom giants like AT&T are now being allowed in.

This agreement between the carrier and ETECSA will enable visitors to Cuba who are on AT&T to make voice calls and send text messages cheaply to numbers in Cuba while also getting access to voice, text, and data roaming. They will be able to do all of this would having to swap out the SIM card.
