Tesla has done a good job of driving the hype around electric cars even though it has faced problems in delivering its cars on time. That difficulty is what BMW has exploited in its latest commercial which takes a swing at the Tesla Model 3 and fears that the company may not be able to meet its release timeframe for its first mass-market electric car.

Tesla unveiled the $35,000 Model 3 earlier this year and quickly received more than 400,000 reservations for the vehicle. It’s not scheduled to deliver the cars until 2017 and many analysts are of the view that Tesla might not be able to meet the timeframe. The company has previously delayed release of its other models so it won’t be surprising if it does the same with the Model 3.

BMW’s latest commercial is aptly named “Waiting,” because that’s what those who reserved a Model 3 are doing right now. The narrator takes some fun jabs at Tesla saying that “You will wait, and wait, and wait some more. All before that electric car company’s new model ever even arrives.” We all know what company he’s referring to.

Then the ad cuts to a shiny new BMW 330e plug-in hybrid that promises a combined 72mpge and proclaims that “it’s the car you’ve been waiting for, without the wait.” Plug-in hybrid or full electric, what would you choose?
