We’ve heard stories of phones exploding before, and unfortunately as much as OEMs try to ensure that this doesn’t happen, stories do pop up from time to time. The latest story comes from the Daily Mail who reported that a cyclist from Sydney, Australia suffered third degree burns after his iPhone exploded in his back pocket.

According to the cyclist, Gareth Clear, it seems that the explosion might have been the result of him falling over after his foot missed the pedal on his bike. When he got up, he claims that he noticed smoke coming out of his back pocket and a searing sensation on his behind, only to realize that it was his phone that was the source of the heat and pain.

“I suddenly saw this incredible plume of smoke, and there was a searing pain that went along with it – as though someone had pushed a huge block of ice against my leg. It was pretty freaking painful. The phone was stuck to my leg having melted through both my shorts and my Skins.” He initially tried to peel the phone off but it was too hot.

Instead Clear was forced to use his fist to punch his phone off his skin. The burns were so bad that Clear needed a skin graft and will be hospitalized for about a week while he undergoes treatment. It isn’t fully clear as to what might have caused the phone to explode, but it seems that Apple have gotten in contact with Clear and are investigating the issue.
