In terms of a unified operating system, Microsoft is probably in the lead with Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile. However it has been suggested that Google could be next thanks to a recent sighting of a Google-made operating system that goes by the name “Fuschia”, which many believe could be Google’s unified OS.
It has been rumored in the past that Google is looking to merge Chrome OS and Android together. There has been some indication that Chrome OS could play nicely with Android apps, so merging both platforms really isn’t that much of a stretch, but that’s just speculation. The Google Source page for Fuschia reads, “Pink + Purple == Fuchsia (a new Operating System)”.
What does this mean? Could Pink/Purple mean Android, and the other mean Chrome OS? We guess that remains to be seen, but it has been noted that Fuschia will come with two different kernels that will depend on what kind of device it is running on. They are named LK and Magenta with their documentation reading:
“LK is a Kernel designed for small systems typically used in embedded applications…On the other hand, Magenta targets modern phones and modern personal computers with fast processors, non-trivial amounts of ram with arbitrary peripherals doing open-ended computation.” If this doesn’t sound like the merging of Android and Chrome OS, we don’t know what else it could mean.
However with Google planning on launching Android 7.0 soon, it would seem that Fuschia isn’t quite ready for primetime just yet. There is also the question of whether at the end of the day it is good enough to make the final cut, because for all we know, Google could simply be trying out some ideas.
