It has only been a few months since Lyft launched a carpool service for those who were commuting outside of San Francisco city limits. A spokesperson for the company has confirmed that the carpool service has now been suspended. The reason for the suspension appears to be that there weren’t a lot of drivers interested in participating in it.
Lyft’s carpool service was only available in the San Francisco Bay Area and the idea was that driver will pick up passengers on their way to work and earn between $4 to $10 per ride. It appears that the service couldn’t appeal to a lot of drivers as they didn’t find any value in picking up passengers for this purpose.
In a statement provided to TechCrunch, a spokesperson for Lyft said “We’re pausing the test because it’s too soon to scale to a meaningful level where supply (Carpool drivers) meets demand (Carpool passengers),” it’s unclear at this point in time if the company plans on resuming this service at some point in the future.
“While we think a scheduled carpool feature is the right long-term strategy, it is too soon to scale to a meaningful level where supply matches demand,” the spokesperson added, which seems to suggest that Lyft might try its hand at a carpool service again.
