diverse_emojiApple used to be criticized for their emojis for failing to show racial diversity as the majority of its emojis featured caucasian people. The Cupertino company quickly addressed that by allowing users to select from various skin tones when choosing emojis. Now the company has addressed another issue, which is gender diversity.

With iOS 10, Apple has announced that they will be including more gender diverse emojis in the operating system. This means that users can expect women to be in different roles and professions. According to Apple, “This exciting update brings more gender options to existing characters, including new female athletes and professionals, adds beautiful redesigns of popular emoji, a new rainbow flag and more family options.”

On top of that, it also looks like Apple will be addressing another controversial emoji, which is that of the pistol. The company was asked by advocacy group New Yorkers Against Gun Violence to remove the revolver emoji, and it looks like with iOS 10 that’s what Apple will be doing as they have swapped out the revolver for a squirt gun.

We’re not quite sure what is the rationale for replacing it with a squirt gun, as opposed to just removing it entirely, but either way it looks like the revolver emoji on iOS devices will be gone. So what do you guys think of these changes?
