nes-classic-editionLast month Nintendo surprised everyone when they announced the NES Classic Edition, which for those unfamiliar is basically a modern take on their NES console from back in the day. The console itself isn’t meant to replace the likes of the Nintendo Wii U or the upcoming NX, but rather it’s just a device for gamers to play retro games that they grew up with.

We suppose by itself it is a pretty cool idea, but it seems that’s not all. During a recent interview with a French-language radio show in Canada, Nintendo of Canada’s communications manager Julie Gagnon revealed that the console would allow gamers tos select from a variety of different display modes, some of which are meant to simulate old CRT screens for that added retro effect.

According to the translation of the interview posted on Nintendo Everything with help from LuigiBlood, Gagnon was quoted as saying, “What is interesting is that we can play through HDMI, but there will be different modes of how we will see the screen – a mode simulating the retro aspect of our old CRT screens, there will be a mode which can be at the resolution of the modern screens in 4:3 format, and a pixel perfect mode which will display each pixel as a square, so people can have fun with this too.”

Of course it goes without saying that since this is translated, it means that it could be misinterpreted, or certain meanings could be lost in translation, but assuming it is accurate, it does sound like it would make for a rather nifty feature.
