It has already been confirmed that Nokia is returning to the smartphone market with Android devices and a new report claims that the new Android-powered smartphones and tablets will be released by the end of 2016. However, it’s unclear at this point in time whether they are going to be high-end flagships or mid-range devices, and if they will be released globally or in select markets initially.

It’s not the same Nokia that you have known for years. The Finnish company sold its handset business to Microsoft a couple of years ago and Redmond recently unloaded the feature phone business to Foxconn.

These handsets are actually going to be made by the HMD Group which comprises of ex-Nokia and ex-Microsoft employees. They have acquired the iconic Nokia brand and will most likely opt for Foxconn as a manufacturing partner for these smartphones.

It was only reported yesterday that HMD has hired 17 year Nokia veteran and ex-Rovio CEO Pekka Rantala as the chief marketing officer. It will be his job to promote the new handsets bearing the Nokia brand once they are released.

The name itself is likely to get many people interested in the handsets as almost all of us have owned a Nokia phone at some point in our lives. Whether or not the new smartphones will be able to appeal to customers is another matter.
