Samsung’s new flagship handset – the Galaxy Note 7 – has been announced today. We’ve already gone hands-on with it and found it to be an excellent device. Since the Galaxy Note 7 features a USB Type-C port it’s not compatible with the existing Gear VR headset. Samsung today launched an improved Gear VR headset which also receives a new paint job.

It more or less looks the same but the new paint job does help it stand out from the predecessor which had dominant splashes of white paint. Samsung has also increased the padding around the headset so that users can have a more comfortable experience wearing the headset for extended periods of time.

The updated Gear VR has a touchpad on the side that’s in the cube-square shape. A dedicated home button has also been added to the handset along with a back button. Samsung has also increased the headset’s field of view from 96-degrees to 110-degrees which makes for a better visual experience.

It features a USB Type-C port which makes it compatible with the Galaxy Note 7. However, it will work with the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S6 as well courtesy of an adapter.

The updated Gear VR costs the same – $99 – and it’s going to be available starting August 19 when the Galaxy Note 7 goes on sale in the US.
