samsung apple watch patentSamsung has their own lineup of smartwatches that looks nothing like the Apple Watch. For a company that has in the past been accused of ripping off Apple’s designs, it’s actually nice to see Samsung grow into their own. Or at least that’s what we thought until a recently discovered patent suggests otherwise.

As discovered by Business Insider and Patently Apple (via MacRumors), it seems that Samsung has filed for a patent regarding smartwatch band swapping mechanisms, and in their submission, it was discovered that the drawings Samsung used looked remarkably like the Apple Watch. Now unlike the iPhone, which some could argue looks like a generic smartphone, the Apple Watch is a bit more unique.

For starters it has what Apple refers to as a “digital crown” on its side, and the position and layout of its heart rate sensor is also unique to the Apple Watch, which is why if you look at the diagrams to your right, if we did not say anything, chances are you would probably assume that is the Apple Watch in question.

Now Samsung isn’t patenting the design itself, but rather the drawings are meant to illustrate the band swapping mechanism. In fact it’s rather ironic that Samsung would choose to use the Apple Watch in their design, especially when you consider that Samsung actually beat Apple to the market in terms of smartwatches, unless of course these drawings are a sign of what’s to come?
