blizzard-50m-cancelFor pretty much the longest time ever, Blizzard has referred to its online services as Battle.net, the universal hub in which all of Blizzard’s games connect to when they go online. However it looks like after a couple of decades of existence, Blizzard has announced that they will be doing away with the name.

According to Blizzard, “We’re going to be transitioning away from using the Battle.net name for our gaming service and the functionality connected to it. Battle.net technology will continue to serve as the central nervous system for Blizzard games—nothing is changing in that regard.” Will there be a new name? Yes and no.

There won’t be a specific name that Blizzard will be using. Instead they will just refer to it as “Blizzard tech”. “We’ll just be referring to it as Blizzard tech instead. You’ve already seen this recently with things like ‘Blizzard Streaming’ and ‘Blizzard Voice,’ and more changes are on the way.”

Will this be confusing? Most definitely as we’re sure that players will be wondering how to refer to Battle.net’s services in the future, but we guess this is something that players will eventually get used to. It is quite a pity since Battle.net has been so iconic and so closely tied with Blizzard’s products, but we guess sometimes things have to change.
