amazon-echo-dotAmazon’s smart speaker Echo was launched last year, and earlier this year the company followed up with a new device called the Echo Dot which is basically a smaller and cheaper version of the Echo. The main difference between the two (apart from the size and price) is that the Echo Dot lacks a proper speaker and needs to be hooked up to one.

This is why the device is cheaper and also ideal for those who already have a sound system that they’d prefer using. The Echo Dot was launched for $90 but it seems that Amazon could have a newer and cheaper model that they plan on launching soon. This is thanks to a report from Recode in which they spotted a tweet by Amazon that accidentally revealed the new product.

The tweet, which has quickly been deleted, reads, “Introducing the all-new Echo Dot. Add Alexa to any room — now for just $49.99.” Assuming that the tweet is the real deal and not a typo by made Amazon, this new Echo Dot would basically save users $40, which in turn would help make adoption of the device (and subsequently Amazon’s Alexa smart assistant platform) easier.

It is possible that the announcement was not meant to go live yet, which is why Amazon has taken it down. It is also possible that it might have been done on purpose to drum up interest, which seems to be working if that was their intention, but either way Amazon has yet to officially launch anything, but judging from the tweet we reckon this new Echo Dot shouldn’t be too far away from being officially revealed.
