The Note 7 will lead the transition to USB-C on the high-end

The Note 7 will lead the transition to USB-C on the high-end

Apple is not the first company to launch a smartphone without a headphone jack. In first prior to the iPhone 7’s launch, there were at least three Android OEMs who beat them to the punch, which just goes to show that Apple is not alone in their thinking that maybe the headphone jack should be retired.

So the question is, who’s next? As it turns out, it could be Samsung. This is according to a report from Digital Music News who claims to have heard from a source that the Galaxy S8 could be ditching the headphone jack as well. However it seems that instead of relying on USB-C for connectivity, Samsung could be thinking about developing their own proprietary jack that would make it incompatible with the iPhone.

This is an odd thing to say since Android uses micro USB/USB-C and Apple relies on Lightning, so they were never really compatible to begin with. However this proprietary jack could complicate things further as it would mean that headphone manufacturers would have to make headphones with the 3.5mm jack, USB-C, Lightning, Bluetooth, and whatever proprietary format Samsung is thinking of launching.

We’re not sure if this is such a smart move or a feasible one as it would basically require many headphone manufacturers to get on board with the idea, as well as other Android OEMs to agree on this new standard. In any case it’s probably best taken with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys make of this rumor?
