huawei-p9-review_12Leica is a brand known by photographers as being a high-end brand for cameras. Now the company has lent their name and brand to other camera manufacturers before, and earlier this year, they lent their name and expertise and technology to Huawei which resulted in the Huawei P9, a smartphone with a dual lens camera setup with Leica’s name on it.

Now there was a bit of controversy about it, in which some had thought that Leica had simply lent Huawei the name, but it was later revealed that both companies had worked together to develop the camera for the handset. In fact it seems that both companies have plans to take their partnership to the next level and have since announced the creation of a new research center.

According to reports, this research center will be working on improving the image quality through better physical optical systems, as well as research into software-based technologies that will also help to improve image capture. It won’t be just for smartphones as well as the researcher center will also be looking into traditional photography, computational imaging, augmented reality, virtual reality, and more.

Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei said, “In the future, over 90 percent of data traffic will be images and videos. The Max Berek Innovation Lab provides the capacity to establish an even closer partnership with Leica, leading to continuous improvements in image and video quality. As a result, we will deliver the most advanced innovations in the smartphone camera market and bring greater value to consumers.”
