As you have probably heard, the iPhone 7 Plus comes with 3GB of RAM versus the 2GB in the iPhone 7. Now 1GB is quite a big difference and you would think that having more RAM is better, right? However a little over a week ago, 9to5Mac put both phones to a test and found that in real-world testing, the extra 1GB didn’t seem to make a noticeable difference.

It was speculated that the extra RAM was added because of the extra processing needed for the dual camera, but given that the camera was not in use, shouldn’t the extra RAM be repurposed for other tasks? The good news is that this seems to be what Apple is doing in the iOS 10.1 beta, at least that’s according to a report from BGR.

According to their testing of the iOS 10.1 beta, it was discovered that apps seem to have their states saved more often than before, whereas previously they would be flushed so that it would free up resources. BGR isn’t alone in noticing this as a posts on Reddit seem to have confirmed that other users were experiencing similar improvements.

That being said, iOS 10.1 is still in beta meaning that Apple is still tinkering with the update which also means that there’s no guarantee this RAM improvement will make the final cut, although hopefully it will. iOS 10.1 will also bring about the portrait camera mode for the iPhone 7 Plus.
