Recently Uber had begun picking up passengers via their self-driving cars. This isn’t a mainstream option yet simply because self-driving cars still need to be regulated, but it is a glimpse into the future. However it looks like that future won’t be just Uber alone because the company’s rival, Lyft, has announced a timeframe for its self-driving cars as well.

According to the company, they envision that within the next 5 years, the majority of their fleet will consist of self-driving cars. This is according to Lyft’s co-founder John Zimmer who offered up his prediction. We should point out that Zimmer’s predictions aren’t necessarily indicative of the company’s plans, but it does give us a glimpse into Lyft’s future, or at least what the company is working towards.

As it stands many companies are working on self-driving technology. However right now they are mostly in the test phase, although Google appears to have made some pretty serious headway into that industry. The company has conducted many self-driving tests, and for the most part they have been successful, save for accidents that were caused by other drivers, not by the self-driving car itself.

However as we said, regulators have yet to catch up to the technology so it is unclear as to what companies will be required to do to make self-driving cars road legal, but we suppose we will get there eventually, it’s just a matter of time.
