macOS_Sierra_iCloud-DriveWhile Apple has no current plans to unify its macOS and iOS operating systems, they are including features that will make communicating between both platforms easier, such as Continuity and Handoff where users can switch from using one device to the other seamlessly, like opening apps, websites, and so on.

Now in case you didn’t know, macOS Sierra and iOS 10 have an interesting new feature: universal clipboard. Yup, this is pretty much what you think it is, and if you didn’t already figure it out, basically both platforms will share a clipboard, meaning that something you copy on your Mac can be pasted on your iOS device, and vice versa.

This only works if both devices have Bluetooth enabled and share the same Apple ID since the copied information will be sent and stored to iCloud. Now it should be noted that it does not happen instantly and it will probably take a second or two to register, but given that it is text it should not be too long. So far text seems to be one of the few things that can be copied and pasted, and there is also a time limit on how long it stays on the clipboard before you have to copy it again.

There is also device compatibility for Macs, and universal clipboard will only work with the 2015 12-inch Retina MacBook or newer, the 2012 MacBook Pro or newer, the 2012 MacBook Air or newer, the 2012 Mac mini or new, the 2012 iMac or newer, or the late 2013 Mac Pro or newer.
