sony ps4 proWhen the Sony PS4 Pro was officially announced, it came with hardware features that we kind of expected, but what we did not expect was Sony to not include a 4K Blu-ray disc drive. Given that Sony kind of made Blu-ray a bit more mainstream with the PS3 and carried it into the PS4, it did seem odd that a 4K Blu-ray drive was missing from the PS4 Pro.

It also seems that this move surprised Microsoft who will be competing head-to-head against Sony with their upcoming Scorpio Xbox console. Speaking to The Guardian, Microsoft’s Albert Penello said, “I don’t want to bait any sort of console war, I have a lot of respect for what Sony does, but analytically, I think they made some interesting decisions in their product that surprised me.”

He adds, “The lack of a 4K disc player, given Sony’s media background, was a surprise. Looking at what they’ve done historically, I don’t think many people would have predicted that. It’s interesting to me that [Sony] arrived at a very similar sort of strategy to Scorpio – we came to this bold idea independently of each other. Even though the tactics are different, the idea, fundamentally, is very similar.”

Now whether or not Sony’s decision will backfire remains to be seen as there have been pretty sound arguments made by those who are for and against Sony’s decision, but only time will tell. Sony’s PS4 Pro is set for a release this coming November.
