overwatch-mei-screenshot-001In many games like RTS and RPG games, minimaps are a pretty common feature. Basically it is a top down look on where the player is, and where their friends/enemies might be, as well as certain points of interest on the map, like an enemy base, resources, quest givers, rare mob spawns, and so on.

No doubt such a feature would be welcome on FPS games like Overwatch and this is something that gamers have asked Blizzard for. Unfortunately it looks like this will not be happening anytime soon, if at all. According to the game’s director Jeff Kaplan, “We don’t have any plans for adding a minimap to the game. Eventually, we would like to add a map for Observers in esport broadcasting but this is a ways off.”

Players have argued that minimaps will help with keeping track of enemies, as well as help new players familiarize themselves with the map. However Kaplan says, “Our reasoning for not adding a minimap is that players claim they want this to solve navigation issues but more often than not, mini-maps in FPS with small maps like OW do not actually help you learn the map much quicker than just playing it a few times. What tends to happen is players demand more and more information on the minimap (enemies in particular).”

Kaplan also stated that he’s not opposed to tools that help players get acquainted with the game and its maps, but he feels that minimaps aren’t the way to go about it.
