Have you ever used a screen protector or a device that has an oleophobic coating? In case you didn’t know, an oleophobic coating basically protects your display from certain oils, namely those from your skin/fingers, which means that while using your phone, you won’t leave behind nasty fingerprint smudges.
However that’s not the direction that Samsung will be heading. Instead according to an announcement by the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, they have revealed that Samsung will be licensing their superhydrophobic film technology. In case the name wasn’t a giveaway, hydrophobic coating acts like oleophobic coating and will be able to repel water.
The coating is also supposed to reduce the amount of light reflection and will resist fingerprints like an oleophobic coating. Now such displays might not be very obvious to customers just by looking at it, but these are some of the subtle changes that a company might make to help enhance the overall experience.
Samsung already has water-resistant phones, so by adding a superhydrophobic coating to its displays, it will no doubt help them sell the feature even more. Unfortunately we have no idea when Samsung plans on implementing the coating to its displays, or which phone will be the first to take advantage of it, so we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out.
