Thinking about which storage option to choose for your iPhone 7? Obviously going the 32GB route will save you some money compared to the 128GB or 256GB option, but note that you could be sacrificing write speeds in the process. Or at least this is according to some tests conducted by the folks at Unbox Therapy.

In the video above, Unbox Therapy compares a 32GB iPhone 7 against the 256GB iPhone 7, and while its read speeds don’t seem to be too different, the write speeds is where the disparity really kicks in. In the test, it was found that the 32GB model has a write speed of 42MB per second, while the 256GB model has a write speed of 341MB per second. That’s a whopping 8 times faster than the 32GB model!

Now you might be thinking that this isn’t a fair comparison since it’s like benchmarks where it’s mostly theoretical, and you’re right, but Unbox Therapy decided to put it to the test in real world usage by transferring files from a MacBook to the iPhone using a USB cable. In that particular test, it was found that a 4.2GB file took about 2 minutes 34 seconds for the 256GB iPhone, and 3 minutes 40 seconds for the 32GB iPhone, almost an entire minute slower.

We should note that this is for write speeds, meaning that if you transfer files over onto your iPhone quite often then chances are you might feel the difference. However in terms of accessing files, the disparity isn’t as huge so the difference in speeds might not be as perceptible, so if write speeds are a priority for you, then you should consider the higher storage iPhone 7/7 Plus.
