Despite Google confirming that their Pixel phones are only IP53 certified, it seems that many are keen to put the phones to the test to see just how long they could survive. Recently we saw a video in which the phone was submerged underwater for 30 minutes and to our surprise, it continued to function just fine.

Recently YouTuber Jonathan Morrison decided to put the Pixel phone to the test but instead of submerging it for 30 minutes, he decided that maybe submerging it for 1 hour might be a better indicator of its durability. So how did it fare? The entire video above actually spans for 1 hour so if you’d rather not spend the next hour watching a phone sit in water, the answer is the phone has survived.

Now to be fair, Morrison did take the phone out of the water at the 30 minute mark to make sure that the phone’s screen did not time out, although we doubt that this could have affected the results that much. Also while the phone did seem to be working just fine, the speakers sound a little muffled.

We’re not sure if they were damaged by the water or if there are some water droplets that are somehow impeding its full sound, and that a drying off should get it back to normal. Of course this doesn’t mean you should go diving with your phone or take photos or videos underwater, it’s just that despite the seemingly fragile description of the IP53 rating, it looks like the Pixel is tougher than we thought. Hopefully for Google’s next Pixel phone they will have more time to include proper water-resistant features.
