Conventional car manufacturers are now getting serious about competing in the electric car market. Several manufacturers have recently confirmed plans of properly competing in the electric car segment and now Maserati is jumping on the bandwagon as well. A division of Fiat Chrysler, Maserati has confirmed that its electric car is going to arrive by 2020.

Maserati is an Italian automaker that primarily deals in luxury cars that are priced well beyond what an average Joe or Jane spends on a car. Its cars are meant for affluent customers who don’t mind paying for nice things.

The Maserati electric car will be Fiat Chrysler’s second electric vehicle apart from the Fiat 500e which has only been available in limited quantity. It’s actually a compliance car and Fiat Chrysler is not making it in considerable volume.

Fiat Chrysler engineering head Roberto Fedeli confirmed in an interview with Car & Driver that Maserati is working on an all-electric car. “I think that we could show something before 2020. Maybe 2019,” he said, adding that the company is working to be ready with a car that it can show in the next couple of years.

Fedeli points out that Maserati’s first electric car is possibly going to be a grand tourer that’s a low-volume model, adding that it’s going to be a challenge for Maserati which is always had a signature engine note and a promise of superior performance. Since electric cars are different machines altogether, it will be a challenge for Maserati to come up with something that its customers actually want to buy.
