The electric car market is advancing rapidly and all of the major conventional car manufacturers are now paying attention. Formula 1 may represent the best of motorsport but cars competing in its events are powered by fossil fuel which is why Formula E was created to promote all-electric racing cars. Mercedes-Benz has a long and colorful history in Formula 1 and it has now confirmed that it will be joining the Formula E grid in 2018.

Mercedes-Benz has been involved in Formula 1 for decades. It stopped participating in the league for a few years before officially returning as a works team in the late 2000s. It has grown significantly since then and now happens to be a championship winning team in Formula 1.

Formula E’s third season is about to kick off in Hong Kong soon. Mercedes-Benz has used this occasion to confirm that it’s going to join the grid in 2018 when the number of teams participating in Formula E is increased from 10 to 12 in its fifth season.

“Formula E wants to become the platform where car manufacturers test and develop the technologies that they will then introduce on their road cars. Having the chance to include a brand like Mercedes in our championship in the future would be a major boost to achieve that objective,” said Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag

Car companies have either partnered or run in Formula E races include some big names like Audi, BMW, Renault, Faraday Future, and Citroën. Companies like Porsche and Nissan are also believed to be interested in joining the grid at some point in the future.
