The revamped set-top box embraces apps in a big way, Apple says that there are now more than 8,000 apps just for the Apple TV and that soon it will play host to some of the most popular mobile and console games. It was confirmed at the event today that Minecraft for Apple TV will be released soon.

Yes, you read that right, Mojang is bringing its popular sandbox game to Apple’s set-top box. In case you’re unaware, Mojang has been acquired by Microsoft, so it’s actually Redmond’s massive open-world sandbox game that’s going to be released for Apple TV “by the end of the year.”

No further details have been confirmed as yet about Minecraft for Apple TV but players will most likely require a third-party gaming controller to get the most out of this title on the set-top box. The set-top box is actually getting a new version of this game which will be called Minecraft: Apple TV Edition.

Mojang should go into the specifics of this new edition of Minecraft in the near future, we’ll be sure to update you when there’s more information on it.
