Google has always been accused of being a memory hog and it’s not like there isn’t any truth to those claims. The company has been working hard to reduce the browser’s RAM consumption and the next update that it’s preparing could halve memory consumption. A report suggests that the upcoming version of Chrome will feature a new JavaScript engine that’s going to have a significantly smaller footprint on the memory.

CNET reports that early testing of this new version of Chrome reveals that heap memory is down by as much as 50 percent on average while zone memory is down 40 percent than before. This isn’t entirely indicative of real-world performance as that’s going to vary from website to website.

It’s going to take a couple of months before the Chrome 55 update is ready for the public. The team working on it says that it’s going to be released on December 6th but those who want to take it for a spin earlier will be able to access it through Chrome’s beta channel.

Chrome happens to be one of the most popular web browsers in the world despite it being a memory hog. Users will certainly appreciate if Google is able to make substantial improvements on this front.
