iphone-7-plus-size-BEver since the iPhone 6, Apple has been introducing two flagship models every year in the form of the “normal” iPhone and the larger “Plus” version, like iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus; iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus; and this year’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. However a recent rumor has suggested that in 2017, we can expect a third model, or can we?

According to a new report from AppleInsider, they are refuting the earlier rumors. The publication claims to have gotten a tip from a source who has been proven right in the past that in 2017, there will not be a 5-inch model as per the previous claims. Right now the iPhone is offered in a 4.7-inch size and a 5.5-inch size, but the earlier rumors suggested we could get a happy middle with a 5-inch model, but apparently that is not true.

AppleInsider argues that a third model would muddy the lineup, not to mention there is little benefit in moving in between models, which we have to agree since the difference in size between the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models already cater to very different crowds. As it stands the smaller iPhone seems to be the more popular of the two, and there is no guarantee that a third “in-between” model will be of any benefit.

In any case these are just rumors for now and since neither Nikkei (who reported the original rumor) nor AppleInsider have the official information, it’s hard to say who is right, so we’ll just have to wait until 2017 to find out. In the meantime what do you guys think? Yay or nay on a potential third 5-inch iPhone model?
