It can be pretty hard to stand out in a crowd of Tinder users, but the company wants to give you a helping hand. Today it announced a fancy new algorithm called Smart Photos. Tinder says that this new algorithm enables users to “maximize the potential of their first profile photo.” Since that’s the only thing most users look at before they decide to swipe left or right the algo should technically help improve your match game.

Smart Photos will automatically alternate the first profile photo seen by users on Tinder. It will also take into account each response as other users swipe on you and it will then reorder photos for each potential new match, Tinder says that this will lead to more matches.

It does make sense. The algorithm will look at data which reveals which photo has the most likely chance of getting you a right swipe and then alternate it as the profile photo in order to give you a theoretically higher chance of matching with someone.

“First impressions matter. With Smart Photos, we’re empowering users to put their best foot forward when forming new connections by implementing a sophisticated algorithm. This our latest innovation to improve profiles which ultimately increase matches,” said Sean Rad, founder and CEO of Tinder.

Since this is a machine learning system it will only get better with consistent use. In Tinder’s case, it will improve each time someone swipes on your profile. It will look at a photo’s general popularity as well as the swiper’s preferences when shuffling photos.
