twitter-replies-character-countFor the longest time ever, Twitter has had a 140-character limit to its tweets, which we guess made sense since they probably did not want users penning long stories and blog posts. However sometimes certain features counted towards the limit which made it rather frustrating, but Twitter changed that last month.

The company started to omit certain features that would count towards the character limit, such as photos, videos, GIFs, and polls, just to name a few. Now it looks like they’re taking it further by removing usernames when replying to other users, as you can see in the screenshot above by Katie Roof at TechCrunch.

Instead a reply to other users will show up as a separate thing, thus leaving the content of the tweet itself open to more characters. Twitter has since confirmed that they are indeed testing out the feature with some of its users and they expect that they will eventually roll it out to the rest of their users, although they did not say when.

It is an improvement although we have to admit that by seeing the “@” mentions in tweets, it makes it clearer as to who the user is replying to. Of course if you are the recipient then we guess it is already pretty obvious, but for others reading your tweets it might not be so clear, but what do you guys think?
