Apple has gradually been expanding its mobile payment service in more markets across the globe, it appears that Spain is the next destination. The company has long promised that it’s going to launch Apple Pay in Spain this year and it appears that Apple may finally follow through tomorrow. A report out of Spain claims that Apple Pay is going to be launched in Spain tomorrow but it will initially have support for just one bank.
The report claims that Santander is going to be the only bank that supports Apple Pay at launch. It merits mentioning here that Santander is already working with Apple Pay in the United Kingdom.
As previously mentioned, Apple promised to launch the payment service in Spain this year but as the months rolled on, there was speculation that perhaps the launch might be pushed back to 2017. Negotiations with banks might be taking time but instead of waiting for them to come around, it appears that Apple has decided to go ahead with it even if it just has support for one bank.
According to reports, one of the reasons why negotiations with Spanish banks are not leading to any conclusion is because they tend to prefer their own mobile payment services and aren’t really that open to letting Apple compete in the market with Apple Pay. The company will have to bring them around if it wants the service to provide any real value to customers in Spain.
