Lenovo was the first manufacturer to show off the very first Project Tango smartphone earlier this year. It comes with Google’s augmented reality features. Lenovo released the Phab 2 Pro about a week ago and now Asus has said that it has developed a Tango-compatible smartphone of its own. The company has confirmed that it’s going to show off its Project Tango smartphone at the Consumer Electronics Show early next year.
Asustek CEO Jerry Shen has confirmed that the company is going to unveil a Tango-compatible smartphone at CES 2017 to Korean trade publication DigiTimes. The upcoming smartphone is going to be called ZenFone AR.
The company has said that the ZenFone AR is going to be launched at some point next year at a “competitive price,” Shen didn’t reveal more about this smartphone because he obviously wants us to wait until CES 2017 to find out more.
Asus has also teased its plans of launching a new lineup of VR devices in the third quarter of 2017. The CEO said that they won’t all be focused on mobile VR, instead they will be all-in-one devices with sensors, built-in cameras, and other hardware.
Shen said that Asustek’s VR headsets will “differentiate from models available on the market such as HTC Vive or Oculus Rift.” He didn’t provide much detail about these devices as well.
