overwatch-dva-screenshot-001With the launch of Overwatch, Blizzard introduced an entirely brand new franchise to its roster. Sure there are games like Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm, but those are kind of based on existing franchises already, so Overwatch is really the first game from scratch that we’ve seen from Blizzard in a long time.

However could it be that the company has a new franchise in the works? It certainly sounds like it because according to two job listings Blizzard has posted (via NeoGAF), it seems that they are recruiting software engineers for an “unannounced project”. The position for Lead Software Engineer has a description that reads, “Blizzard Entertainment is seeking an experienced tools engineer to work on an unannounced project that utilizes a robust first-person engine.”

It also says that it would be a plus if the applicant has “Previous experience working on first-person or other action-oriented games.” So far apart from Overwatch, Blizzard has no other first-person game, and a sequel/expansion to Overwatch might be a bit too early. Plus it also seems that the role of these engineers is to work on an engine and it’s highly unlikely that Overwatch will be getting a new engine.

Some have speculated that it could be for a single-player campaign for Overwatch that will help develop the characters and tell its story further, although so far fans seem to be pretty happy with the animated shorts and comics released so far. An alternative could be Diablo 4, although making Diablo in the first-person would be a major shakeup to the gameplay. In any case we wouldn’t be surprised if Blizzard is working on new projects all the time, so whether or not this will materialize into something remains to be seen.
