All of us have at some point in time probably played some kind of air instrument, whether it be air guitar, air bass, air piano, or air drums, just to name a few, especially when it comes to your favorite songs. However they are basically air instruments, meaning they’re not real, there is no sound.

However the folks at Freedrum have created accessories for drumsticks that helps to bring air drumming to life. “Freedrum is a virtual drumkit that fits in your pocket. We want to bring the drumming experience from soundproof studios to the outdoors, your sofa, or any other place you have access to a smartphone. Whether you’re an aspiring drummer or you have been doing it for decades – Freedrum is designed to create an immersive experience for drummers of any skill level!”

Freedrum are basically sensors stuffed inside a plastic box that are then attached to your drumsticks. As you can imagine, the sensors will be able to pick up the movement you make and via an accompanying app, it will interpret those movements into sound. Now we haven’t actually tested it out ourselves so we can’t speak for its accuracy, but its creators have promised that it will work with iOS and Garageband.

There are also a pair of sensors that can be strapped to your shoes to mimic the bass drum/hi-hats. It’s an interesting idea and if you find yourself constantly on the go and want to keep up your practice, this could be a pretty useful/novel way of doing it.
