iphone-7-bottomAbout a week ago, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities revealed that an iPhone with a 5.8-inch display would be launched next year. This is quite a huge step up for Apple considering that the biggest phone display they’ve ever had was 5.5-inches, so to make the jump to 5.8-inches is quite a leap.

However in a follow-up research note, Kuo reveals additional details about the display. According to Kuo, he claims that while the display itself will be of the 5.8-inch variety, the active area of the display is said to measure 5.1-5.2-inches. What this means is that the area that actually displays information and that can be used isn’t 5.8-inches, but the size we mentioned above.

We’re not sure how this will work, or why this was even done in the first place. However it has been suggested that the iPhone 8’s display will be of the curved variety, so maybe when it’s a total of 5.8-inches including the curved corners/edges. In any case it does seem a bit weird, but Kuo has been known to be right on the money many times in the past, so perhaps there is some truth to his claims.

Also we have also heard rumors that Apple’s suppliers might be tight on OLED supply. This could result in Apple either being forced to delay the launch to 2018, or they could launch one variant of 2017’s iPhone with an OLED display, while the rest uses LCD. Until then take it with a grain of salt.
