macbook_pro_touch_bar_ssdLast month during a teardown of the new 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar, it was a pleasant surprise to discover that the laptop actually came with a removable SSD. What this means is that users who feel that the current storage isn’t enough have the option of removing it and replacing it with bigger and potentially cheaper storage.

Unfortunately it seems that cannot be said about the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. According to a report from MacRumors, one of their readers Jesse D. opened the bottom of his new MacBook Pro and discovered that the SSD in the laptop is non-removable as it was soldered directly to the logic board.

What this means is that if you wanted more storage, be sure to select the largest available storage before buying, or else you’ll need to start stocking up on external drives. As MacRumors points out, this also means that you’ll want to be extra vigilant when it comes to backing up your data in the event of a logic board failure.

As it stands the new MacBook Pros are pretty pricey, and opting for 512GB of SSD storage will no doubt drive up the price even more, so either you learn to start juggling and managing your files, or be prepared to spend extra money. The upside here is that according to early benchmarks, the 15-inch MacBook Pro appears to have the fastest SSD in the market right now.
