google-pixel-phone-launch_04You might recall that sometime last month it was reported that in the latest Android 7.1 Nougat update, Google was bringing features like Night Light and fingerprint swipe gestures to its Pixel devices, and will also be skipping over the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P handsets in the process. This is unfortunate but given Google’s new strategy, we guess it was inevitable.

However the good news is that all hope is not lost just yet. According to Android Police who reached out to Google to ask whether or not it is possible that some of those features could arrive on older Nexus devices, Google responded by saying that they are evaluating a firmware update that could bring some of those features, such as fingerprint swipe gestures, onto the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.

Now before get too excited and think that your Nexus handset’s usefulness and lifespan has been extended by getting new features, note that Google only said that they are evaluating it. This means that it is not a guarantee that they will go ahead with their plans since there are many factors to take into consideration.

However as Android Police points out, the fact that Google is evaluating this is a sign that the company is taking user feedback seriously. In any case don’t get your hopes up just yet, but we’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled so check back with us at a later date to see if there are any additional details that can be shared.
