overwatch-mei-screenshot-001Due to the nature of Overwatch which is pretty much a competitive multiplayer FPS game, it means that it would be hard to introduce a storyline, unlike single-player games, or even games that came with a story mode. This is why Blizzard has opted to release comics and animated shorts that would tell Overwatch’s story for them.

Blizzard had also planned to release a graphic novel about the game called “First Strike”, but it seems that the graphic novel has since been cancelled, according to a post on the Overwatch forums by the game’s leader writer, Michael Chu who says that the cancellation of the graphic novel came about after they decided to take the story in a different direction.

According to Chu, “The original idea for the graphic novel dates back to the early days of the game’s development and came from our desire to tell the story of the founding of Overwatch during the Omnic Crisis. In the years since First Strike’s conception, we have done a lot of development on the universe and its stories. While the core of this story remains, we have changed and expanded upon how we see the events that took place during the first days of Overwatch.”

“So for now the early adventures of Gabriel Reyes, Jack Morrison, Ana Amari, Reinhardt Wilhelm, Torbjörn Lindholm (and more!) wait for another day. But we know that this is a story that you are excited about, and it’s one we still plan to tell.” Basically Blizzard isn’t done telling Overwatch’s story, but you might have to wait a bit longer if you’re hoping to see a graphic novel for it.
